QGAir Townsville in Australia-first marker flare rescue
Earlier this week the Townsville QGAir helicopter rescued four people off the coast of Townsville by deploying a life raft using Mark 58 marker flares. With the assistance of night goggles, the QGAir crew released the marker flares so as to provide a flying pattern to accurately deploy the life raft. QGAir is the only emergency rescue helicopter operator in Australia outside the Defence Force to utilise these flares for search and rescue operations. It was the first time that a life raft has been dropped using this procedure by a civil aircraft. The QGAir rescue team consisted of Pilot John Barnard, Air Crew Officer Mark Dainer and Rescue Officer Steve Ackers. Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) captured some of the rescue and it can be seen here.
